Virgin buys rights to air American Inventor
LONDON - Virgin Media Television has bought the rights from Fremantle Media Enterprises to broadcast 'American Inventor', a US series along the lines of BBC Two's 'Dragon's Den', which will air on Virgin 1 in the spring.
The show, which aired on ABC in the US to an audience of 14m viewers, gives aspiring inventors the chance to win $1m for creating the best new invention.
A panel of four judges -- Peter Jones; businessman and former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman; sports entrepreneur Pat Croce; and Spanx underwear creator Sara Blakely -- will narrow the competitors down to six finalists.
The finalists will be given $50,000 to develop and refine their product and the public will then vote to decide on the winning invention.
Virgin's deal covers two seasons of the show, with the first season running for 16 episodes and the second running for eight episodes.
It was negotiated by Amy Barham, Virgin1's head of acquisitions, and Justin Hatfield, Fremantle's vice-president of sales in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Benelux.
Barham said: "Virgin1's spring schedule is all about populist, broad entertainment and 'American Inventor' fits the bill perfectly.
"Fun, hilarious and with a compelling and genuine story at heart, the show is pure entertainment and really embodies what Virgin1 stands for."
Separately, Virgin Media-owned Living has commissioned a brand new series called 'Conversations with a Serial Killer', which will air on its Living channel in autumn this year.
The eight-part series traces the lives of some of the most notorious and fascinating serial killers in the modern age through a blend of documentary, archive material, eye-witness accounts and paranormal investigation.
The series hopes to open up a spiritual dialogue with deceased infamous murderers, such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Aileen Wurnos and Ted Bundy. It will also document their lives and investigate the influences upon their earthly existences.
Each episode will feature British investigative journalist Julie McDonald and US psychic medium and ex cop, Bobby Marchesso. They will look into the lives of one infamous serial killer per episode, tracing their lives and attempting to spiritually communicate with their tortured souls.
