RKCR/Y&R invites controversy with shocking BBC race spot

by Colin Marrs, Campaign 27-Feb-08, 13:20

LONDON - Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R has created a provocative ad to promote BBC2's new season on Britain's white working class.

Set to Billy Bragg's version of the hymn Jerusalem, the ad consists of a white man, slowly having his face blacked over by handwriting.

Each script represents a different culture or language, including Arabic or Hebrew.

It ends with the line: "Is white working class Britain becoming invisible?"

The first show in the season, a documentary on a working man's club in Bradford, breaks on 7 March.

Other shows in the series will include a look at the impact of Enoch Powell's "rivers of blood" speech, and an examination of the impact of Polish immigration.

Quite possibly the most boring ad I have ever seen. Ridiculously long - I hope it won't be popping up on telly in this length.

Good idea for a series. Tediously overplayed metaphor for an ad

I find it subtle, intelligent and effective at communicating the point of the program. I would question if it is too clever, and wonder who the target audience is?

This program is an insult to all non white of Britain. There is a high percentage here in the UK that never asked to come. Also a high percent that were invited to come for work. These lower class jobs that were offered, were they where the white Britain's expected the lower class arrivals to stay??? And did the white Britain think that the non whites had no friends and family that would also come. Or was the invite to Britain ment to be a lifetime sentence of slavery and poverty. It would be interesting to run a program on how the white Britain would pay to re-integrate the non white Britain back to where they came from. Then the white Britain can work hard to re-establish Britain as white. What is Britain about? Is Britain Great or is Britain White? Its time to live together and stop insulting people for who they are or do something to make it how you really want it. 'Closet racism' Maybe that is where the white Britain working class have gone to if they find they are becoming invisible. On the other hand if we all could live together like the animals can and forgot the skin colour Britain would be Great Britain!

dito martin - this is a place to talk about creative work our peers are doing - I'm sure no one else is making any political stance on the programme itself!

Nothing new under the sun, is there? The idea and execution seems terribly reminiscent of Zhang Huan's 'Family Tree' series...
