Harrods launches £30 Poulet et Champignon Pot Noodle

by Nicola Clark, Marketing 13-Mar-08, 13:20

LONDON - Pot Noodle, the Unilever instant noodle brand that once marketed itself as the 'Slag of All Snacks', has formed an unlikely partnership with Harrods.

The noodle snack is launching a limited edition Harrods-branded Chicken and Mushroom variant which will retail for £29.95. All proceeds will go to Action Against Hunger.

The luxury 'Poulet et Champignon' dining experience will be presented in a limited-edition case with a fork and table linen. Harrods is also recommending that filtered mineral water is used to 'rehydrate the dish'.

Pot Noodle is made in the Welsh town of Crumlin in South Wales where 155 million pots a year are produced. Last year the brand was voted the most hated brand in Marketing magazine and Joshua G2's Brand We Love and Hate survey.

The unlikely partnership is part of a range of unique and limited edition products which have been created as part of a 'Design Icon' initiative at the store which has been launched to celebrate innovation in design.

A token gesture towards charity if you ask me. Seriously how many people outside the navel-gazing superficial drowning in cash ad world are likely to buy this joke? How much money is it really going to make for the hungry? The charity aspect just looks like an attempt to put a moral condiment on a bad taste idea. Blood sugar levels were obviously running low when they dreamt this one up. Still its made Brand Republic and probably Campaign and thats what counts! It will leave a nasty taste in the mouth of people who campaign against poverty and hunger. I predict a backlash.

I think it's a genius idea - I can just image a 4x4 driving footballers wife getting really exited by this and buying it. The rest of the world are not that stupid, but who are we to stand in the way of those with more money than sense. Plus, slapping "charity" all over it will give them the excuse to buy...."oh yeah but it's for a good cause" - well done pot noodle!

I'd sooner make a donation and use the gift aid scheme (Darling didn’t touch it for 3 years) than buy a pot noodle. How about give some money to charity or you have to eat a pot noodle, now that’s an incentive to give

Pot Noodle when it was launched was seen to be a hot snack that would be eaten 4 times a year by consumers. In fact when it was launched it had customers eating it 4 times a week, it was initial aimed at hikers , campers and caravanners. So now its gone OTT at £30 a pot. Better if the buyer spent the money on plain old Chicken & Mushroom PN and sent the difference to Oxfam or a similar agency. Sorry but this is a "stunt" dreamt up by a well you work it out. How do I know these things well I launched the brand when it was Golden Wonder owned in the North West of Scotland and Marketing at GW used KP Oodles of Noodles as its template.

Erm, guys, this is a publicity stunt. They don't really care how much it sells, they just want people to read about it and talk about it. Fair play to them.

Despite it being for a good cause and all (there must be better ways of raising money for charity, right?), dare I say you'd have to be off your Al-Fayed to buy this? Fools and their money etc...
