Facebook launches instant messaging service
LONDON - Facebook has launched an instant messaging service, called Facebook Chat, on its social networking site in the UK.
Users can start a conversation by clicking on the chat icon, found in the top right-hand corner of the homepage, and friends who are online will appear with a green dot beside their name in a new window. Users then click on their friend's name to start chatting.

Their message will appear as a new chat conversation on their friend's page, who can then chat back by typing in the conversation window.
However, users can also avoid receiving chat messages by changing their settings to appear "offline".
Users can chat only with confirmed friends and at this stage can only have one-to-one conversations with people.
The service is similar to those provided by MSN, Skype and Yahoo!.
Facebook already allows users of its site to access other chat type applications such as Twitter.
