LONDON - Usage of mobile TV services by communications provider Orange's customers increased by 87% between November and January.

According to the Orange Digital Media Index, which surveyed customers' mobile phone usage in January, usage of advanced mobile entertainment services such as mobile TV, mobile internet and mobile video downloads, increased sharply in recent months.

The total number of hours viewed for mobile TV has grown by 87% since the last report was compiled in December. The popularity of mobile internet has also grown, marked by a 35% increase in page impressions. In addition, the number of video downloads by Orange customers has doubled in the past year.

Matthew Kirk, director of portals for Orange, said the data shows that mobile phones have emerged as a multimedia content device, becoming what he termed consumers' "third screen" for entertainment alongside the TV and PC.

The Orange Digital Media Index examines usage patterns across the Orange's entertainment and communications services, such as home broadband, text and picture messaging, and mobile internet.
