Media choice: Heart 106.2

by Simon Blackburn, Head of radio, MPG, Marketing 13-May-08

Despite stiff competition from Magic's Neil Fox and Capital Radio's Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen, the lively duo that is Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott has struck gold once again for London's Heart 106.2.

Although quarterly Rajar figures have been known to produce some
'interesting' results, trends provide a clearer picture and this result
is not a one-off. Jamie and Harriet have achieved the number-one

breakfast spot in London in four of the past six Rajars. So what is the

key to their success?

Three years on air together certainly helps. Time has enabled them to
develop a strong mutual understanding, which results in a natural
fluency on air. There is also a relaxed feel about the way these
presenters openly and light-heartedly tease each other on air, as well
as relating to their personal lives and sharing their experiences with
listeners. Also, as Jamie and Harriet effectively are their target
audience, the challenge to interact effectively with their listeners is
that much easier.

The aforementioned attributes, coupled with lively and topical
conversations and impressive guest appearances, is clearly working for
them. Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen will continue to pose the most
likely threat to their reign although the latest set of results suggest
that they still have some way to go.
