Google remains king of UK searches with 87% share

LONDON - Google continues to reign as the UK's most popular search engine, accounting for 87.3% of searches in May, according to Hitwise.

Google's share remained steady from April 2008, however when compared to May 2007, its share was up by 12%.

By comparison, Yahoo! accounted for just over 4% of UK searches in May 2008, which was up 2% on April.

Hitwise's figures vary from that of comScore, which reported last week that Google accounted for 74.4% of searches in April and Yahoo! accounted for 4.4%.

MSN was the third most popular search website during May according to Hitwise, as it accounted for around 3.70% of UK searches. It was followed by Ask search properties, which accounted for just over 3% of searches.

MSN increased 2% compared to April 2008 and Ask increased by 6%.

In the US, Google accounted for 68.29% of all U.S. searches in May. Yahoo! Search, MSN Search and Ask.com each received 19.95%, 5.89% and 4.23% respectively.
