Nintendo denies Wii YouTube clip is publicity stunt

LONDON - A YouTube clip of a young woman gyrating in her knickers as she plays the Wii Fit hula hoop game has attracted accusations of fakery because the man who posted it works in advertising.

Giovanny Gutierrez, a marketing executive from Florida, posted the footage of his girlfriend Lauren Bernat playing the game wearing just a T-shirt, stripy knickers and glasses two weeks ago, and it has proved a big hit with over 2m views on YouTube. Gutierrez is director of interactive media at US ad agency Tinsley Advertising.

However the one-minute clip, called 'Why every guy should buy their girlfriend a Wii Fit', has aroused suspicions from some viewers who pointed out that Gutierrez works in advertising.

His clip was posted as a response to another clip called "Wii Fit Hula Hoop makes you look stupid".

Nintendo has been forced to deny giving Gutierrez a secret brief to market the game, claiming that it is "absolutely, 100% nothing to do with Nintendo", adding that Nintendo did not create it and was not aware of it until it was brought to their attention.

The Wii Fit game allows users to do a range of exercises and stretches, such as hula hooping, step aerobics and yoga poses, with the guidance of an on-screen instructor. It went on sale in the UK in April and sold more than 300,000 copies in the first two weeks.

Gutierrez filmed his 25-year-old girlfriend, who also works in advertising, without her knowledge and he said that she was furious when she first found out, but has since calmed down.

The YouTube clip has already spawned a spoof in which a woman films her boyfriend playing Wii Fit with his T-shirt tucked into his pants.

I don't think anyone is saying it's a bad thing if it was a fake.

Was having this conversation last night women seem to want a Wii. it's impressive work by Nintendo to see how they have created a niche in the games market. PS3 might get dismissed as a boys toy, but the Wii is seen as something different.

There a various clips in recent years to promot shows, goods and products such as the wii fit. This is no nad thing and works well, especially with the tag. Wii have corned the gaming market as they have been able to produce not only a unique playing experience and games for gamers, but also get a niche of the market who would not usually buy a games console.

Am thinking of filming my own version using the cadbury gorilla or Fern Britton...

I'm thinking that Fern would have been awesome prior to her slimming down. I don't think you want another skinny bird in her knickers. The only sensible response to this is big fun as the Wii appeals to all groups.

The guy was blatantly not paid by Nintendo, he was just sat in his living room and an advert unfolded infront of his eyes, being in advertising he filmed it. I'm sure he has made no money directly but I'm sure there will be a lot of business coming his way soon.

What if... Nintendo accused themselves of faking it to generate even more ass staring publicity. The double viral bluff!

now that would be slick - do it, grass yourself up for the PR and then deny it to double the PR - even if they didn't do this, I bet someone in their marketing dept or agency will lay claim to the genius!

Would you film your own girlfriend doing this, and have urself gawking at the camera at the beginning and end of the clip & stick it up on utube ? Me neither ! - most likely a PR stunt. But then I cant quite understand why anyone would deny it.

There's a good alternative available via Digg featuring a Playboy model doing a similar routine. She's very good.
