Muse top online poll to become first band played on NME Radio

LONDON - An online poll to decide the first ever track to be played on NME Radio saw a record 3.5m votes cast via NME.com

The poll on NME.com invited fans to vote online by rating over 100 classic and new tracks from the last 40 years out of 10, with the highest rated song opening the new station.

Muse's 'Knights of Cydonia' topped the poll to launch the station, which kicked off the Claire Sturgess show at 11am this morning. Other highly rated songs included tracks from The Killers, Oasis, The Strokes and the Tings Tings.

Paul Cheal, NME publishing director, said: "By casting millions of votes, NME.com's users have shown just how passionate they are about their favourite bands. We couldn't have got NME off to a better start."

After learning the news, Muses's Matt Bellamy declared: "Cheers, thanks a lot to all the voters. Good new station, will be listening."

The new alternative indie music station is available on Sky 0184, Virgin Media 975, as well as online. It will shortly be available on various locations on DAB and on FM from October 6, commencing in London.
