BBC One's New Tricks wins primetime slot with 8.1m

LONDON - BBC One's detective drama 'New Tricks' pulled in 8.1m viewers last night, beating ITV1's 'Police, Camera, Action' documentary to win the primetime slot, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The second episode of the popular detective series, starring Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong, saw the team investigating the case of an actor who died on stage after a freak accident. It attracted a 35.9% share of the 9pm-10pm audience for BBC One.

'New Tricks' easily beat ITV1's special edition of 'Police, Camera, Action', featuring the top 10 ultimate car crimes, which pulled in 3.8m viewers and a 16.7% share of the audience.

Channel 4's documentary 'The Qur'an', which reported what the Qu'ran actually says about killing to defend the faith and about women, netted 1.2m viewers and a 5.3% share of the 8pm-10pm audience, including Channel 4+1 ratings.

BBC Two's 'Mary Queen of Shops' series pulled in 1.7m viewers and a 7.6% share of the 9pm audience. It beat Five's 'Banged Up' documentary series, presented by David Blunkett, which attracted just 885,000 viewers and a 3.8% share.

'Big Brother' managed 2.8m viewers and a 16.3% share of the 10pm-11pm audience for Channel 4, including Channel 4+1 ratings.

Earlier in the evening, 'EastEnders' won the 8pm-8.30pm slot for BBC One with 7.8m viewers and a 37.1% share of the audience.

ITV1's 'Holiday Driving Hell' pulled in 4m viewers and an 18.9% share of the 8pm audience, beating BBC Two's 'University Challenge', which netted 2.5m and an 11.6% share.

Five's 'The Gadget Show' attracted 986,000 viewers and a 4.5% share of the 8pm-9pm audience.
