Waitrose hires Grand Union to digital account

LONDON - Waitrose has appointed Grand Union as its lead digital agency as it looks to ramp up its digital strategy.

Rob Collins, director of e-commerce at Waitrose, said: ‘Grand Union showed a deep understanding of the needs of the business, and the Waitrose e-commerce strategy. They offered an innovative digital strategy heavily geared towards delivering on our key business objectives and developing our business online.'

Waitrose plans to go head-to-head with Marks & Spencer Simply Food, Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local next year with the launch of a convenience format. It is also trialling a market town format offering fresh foods and local produce.

Waitrose, which is owned by John Lewis Partnership, has 187 UK stores. It will open nine new stores this year.
