The Week: Media news - Google sets up Wiki rival

Campaign 01-Aug-08

Google is launching a new online information website to rival Wikipedia called Knol.

Entries on the service will be written by people with particular areas
of expertise and will include bylines, unlike Wikipedia, where
contributors remain anonymous. If an author includes an ad, Google says

it will offer a share of revenue from the ad placement. Separately, the

former Google staffer Anna Patterson and her husband Tom Costello have
launched a rival search engine called Cuil.com, which claims to index
three times as many pages as any other search engine.
