NEW YORK - US mobile giant Verizon is close to signing a deal with Google to make its mobile search service the default on Verizon handsets, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

According to the report the deal could see Google and Verizon split advertising revenue, but there are still details to be hammered out, such as whether or not Google can keep user data generated by searches.

The newspaper reports that Verizon has been in talks with other web companies in a bid to come up with an offering that would be a one-stop-shop for mobile web users on the hunt for services such as new ringtones and restaurant listings.
