Music and podcast provider Wippit closes

LONDON - One of the UK's first legal music download providers, Wippit, has ceased trading due to "the current market climate".

The site, which started life in 2001 as a subscription-based unlimited music service for independent labels, had branched out into individual track sales and struck deals with SonyBMG, Warner Music and EMI.

It also entered into the paid-for podcast market, and provided the platform for veteran BBC Radio FiveLive presenter Danny Baker's foray into podcasting last year.

In a statement posted on its website last night, Wippit said: "After eight years of pushing the digital boundaries, Wippit can no longer compete in the current market climate.

"Thank you to everyone that has supported us over the years and apologies to those that will miss us."
