Hadlow, who will take up her new role in early November, has been controller of BBC Four since July 2004, in which time drama has become one of the key parts of the schedule and music programming has increased in popularity.

The channel counts among its successes: 'Lost Decade', 'Edwardians', 'The Thick of It', 'Blood and Guts' and 'Lead Balloon'.

Prior to her time at BBC Four, Hadlow was head of specialist factual at Channel 4, where she commissioned programmes including David Starkey's 'Six Wives of Henry VIII' and 'Elizabeth', 'The 1940s House' and 'The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off'.

Before Channel 4, Hadlow worked for the BBC which she joined as a production trainee in 1986.

Hadlow replaces Keating, controller of BBC Two since June 2004, who will be taking up the new role of director of archive content for the BBC as reported in July.

Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, said: "Janice is an outstanding original thinker who has led BBC Four from strength to strength.

"She has demonstrated a passion for intelligent television across the different genres, with an eye for making an impact, whether that is in serious factual programming, mould breaking comedy or authored drama."

Hadlow said: "For me there's no channel that's more exciting, more original, more enticing and above all, more important.

"Growing up, it was BBC Two that helped shape my vision of the world, with its distinctive mix of intelligence, authority and wit."

Bennett will advertise the role of controller of BBC Four in the next few weeks.
