Metro trials newspaper recycling scheme

LONDON - Associated Newspapers' free daily Metro is embarking on a six-month trial of a scheme to encourage its readers to recycle their newspapers.

Specially designed recycling bins are being introduced at Watford, West Ruislip, Stanmore, Cockfosters, Hainault and High Barnet stations. The bins feature both the Metro and London Underground logos along with the line 'Recycle your newspaper here'.

Associated Newspapers has also backed other  initiatives including newspaper recycling bins in Westminster, advertising campaigns, in-paper messaging to change reader behaviour and an office recycling bins programme.

Marian Kelly, environment manager at London Underground, said: 'Last year we worked with our contractors Tube Lines and Metronet to recycle 40% of all litter left on the Tube and on our stations. We want to increase the amount of newspapers we recycle and hope that the introduction of the first recycling bins on the Tube will help us do that.'
