LONDON - The Telegraph Media Group has become the first UK publisher to launch an application for Google's Android mobile phone operating system.

Coinciding with the launch of the first Android phone in the US, the application is free and allows users to access the latest general, finance, sport, travel and motoring news from Telegraph.co.uk.

T-Mobile is launching the first UK phone to use the open source operating system at the end of the month.

Applications can be downloaded by users from the Android Marketplace.

Edward Roussel, digital editor at TMG, said: "Our goal is to serve high-quality news and provocative views to our readers wherever they are in the world and in as convenient a way as possible.

"Android will provide a leap forward in helping us deliver on this strategy."
