BR Video: Who should be the next 'Doctor Who'?

by Jacquie Bowser, Brand Republic 07-Nov-08, 08:00

LONDON - 'Mr Bean' was one of the more colourful suggestions made by the public in the latest Brand Republic Video, but the majority were divided over who should replace David Tennant as the Doctor when he steps down at the end of next year -- watch the video now.

Following Tennant's announcement last week that he was quitting his role as 'Doctor Who' on the hit BBC show, Brand Republic asked people who they thought would be the best replacement.

Opinions were mixed, with Paterson Joseph, John Simm, David Morrisey and James Nesbitt all receiving a similar number of votes from the public.

Most of the people questioned agreed that the new 'Doctor Who' needed to have comedic flair -- so Eddie Izzard, Danny Dyer and Mr Bean, the character played by Rowan Atkinson, were flagged as possibilities for their humourous touch.

Paddy Power has placed Paterson Joseph, who has appeared in 'Peep Show' and 'Green Wing', as the favourite to take on the role.

Joseph, who has already appeared in a number of 'Doctor Who' episodes, playing Roderick, would be the first black Doctor -- an appointment that could chime strongly with some following the victory of Lewis Hamilton on the F1 circuit and Barack Obama on the campaign trail.

Tennant, who took over the role from Christopher Eccleston in the 2005 Christmas special, has scooped an array of awards for his performances in the BBC show and won affection from the viewing public.

He was the 10th actor to star as the Doctor since the programme made its TV debut back in 1963. Others who have made the role their own include John Pertwee, Peter Davidson and Tom Baker, who competes with Tennant in the hearts of the public for the accolade of most popular Doctor ever.

Before he departs, Tennant will appear in the BBC Christmas special this year, four specials in 2009 and a final special edition in which his character will regenerate into a new Doctor.

Rick Astley - without a doubt. He'd be 'the best Doctor Who ever'

That's a great vid. Bill Nighy or David Morrisey get my vote.

Patterson Joseph is great, but I'm afraid I will never be able to take him seriously after watching him in Peep Show playing Johnson - fantastic espcially the episode where he wants to merge sales and marketing. He will always be Johnson to me. As Mark would say "I'm going to be Johnson's queen. If the public will accept me"

Russell Brand as the Doctor, Georgina Baillie as his assistant and Andrew Sachs as the leader of the rejuvenated Daleks - his first lines will be "what is wit-nit?".

When looking at all those front runners think for a moment.. Doctor Who is a huge role and character..and the actor must be good with children.. instantly on a childs level, why you think David.. Jon and Tom where just so good at it.. Why did you think Chris Ellclestone left so soon..the character outside the studio was not for him..and you have to be the Doctor 24/7.. Thinking about that allow me to suggest someone.. Dan Wright \(Big Cook Little Cook) on Childrens BBC I could easily see him as a clown character of the Doctor in the clothes of Colin or Syvester and he has a kids expressionate face of boundless energy.. From an acting point of view he comes with no sterotypical baggage.. Rather like Tom did, and to a lesser extent David..And above all hes gr8 with kids as themselves..Id like to here your views..
