LONDON - Animal rights charity Peta has dispensed with actresses, supermodels and celebrities and in a surprise move, hired strippers for its latest 'I'd rather go naked' campaign.

The girls of Rick's Cabaret, apparently the only strip joint on the NASDAQ, pose topless for the charity with the strapline "We'd rather go topless than wear fur".

I like the idea, the way it's presented in the same style as the poster you would see outside a strip club \(allegedly!). My only concern, and this is by no means meant as the broad, sweeping generalisation that it will no doubt sound like, is that offer any stripper a fur coat and she'll probably take it.

Nobody takes PETA to task, rather like Kidscape, NSPCC, the Victims of Crime Trust etc. Just because they're non-profit doesn't mean that they're beyond reproach.

Erm, I don't get it. Nuns, Burqa clad muslims, Germaine Greer, now you're talking. Well, perhaps not Germaine Greer.

Eh? What does that even mean? What are the extraordinary set of circumstances that would lead to this choice being made? Is that how these women got into stripping - they were offered two choices wear fur, or go naked. They chose the latter. This makes no sense, unless they are delibrately belittling their own trade \(i.e. going topless is the less of two evils), which seems unlikely.

Shouldn't it be "We'd rather go clothed than wear fur?"

"Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it." -- PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk, in the September 1989 issue of Vogue, Sep 1989. That's the same person who said she'd put the life of a 100 lab rats ahead of a dieing baby.... F**k that !

In fact, strippers are incredibly moral people. Not only do they not wear fur, but they also stand pertly against sweatshop clothes, non-organic cotton and any item of clothing with a high carbon footprint - no matter how small or lacy. They probably have to turn the heating up, though.
