Matthew d'Ancona, the editor of the weekly political and current events magazine, said he was "honoured" by Cleese's acceptance of the role.

D'Ancona said: "In my book, John is the greatest living Englishman, and -- among many other things -- a brilliant writer, whose interests range far and wide."

Cleese, whose first piece will appear in this Thursday's issue, said: "I agree with Matthew and am grateful for his characteristic tone of understatement."

The world-famous face of Monty Python is also one of the celebrities active on micro-blogging service Twitter. The number of people following his Twitter updates has grown from just above 30,000 in January to 115,256 today.

The Spectator has a circulation of 77,146, which is up 0.3% over six months and 2% over a year.
