LONDON - YouTube is to undergo a redesign, intended to improve its appeal to TV and film studios and subsequently boost ad revenues.

The Google video site is to add a portal that will be more suited to carrying TV and film and add fresh content from partners including Sony Pictures and Endemol.

The revamp is designed to boost YouTube's commercial growth. It has so far been held back by its lack of formal links with studios as the site can only sell advertising against content from partners with whom it has an official arrangement. TV-style in-video advertising will be sold as part of Google TV.

YouTube has been testing its TV-like ad spots to run within shows since October and it will also allow its partners to bring their own ads into the service.
