LONDON - Twitter and Facebook apps are to be integrated into Microsoft's Xbox 360 in time for Christmas allowing consumers to access the social media sites during game play.

The social media apps can be downloaded from Xbox Live, enabling users to access a limited number of features from each site. Facebook members will be able to browse photos, look at friends profile streams and update their statuses, while Twitter users will be able to tweet and access live feeds.

Facebook Connect, the single sign-on service, will also allow gamers to log in to Facebook via Xbox Live and broadcast their gaming activities via their social network profile pages.

A Microsoft executive told Eurogamer that the company had set an 'autumn' date for the integration. "It will be before Christmas," he said. "A lot of the background work's been done for a lot of the applications are coming."

Microsoft made a £240 million investment in Facebook in October 2007. Facebook is now the most popular social networking site in the world, with more than 250 million active users.

The software giant hopes Twitter and Facebook APIs will encourage developers to build apps that bridge the divide between social networks and console games, and fully integrate the service with the gaming experience
