Whole Foods Market revives UK expansion plans
LONDON - Whole Foods Market, the natural and organic food retailer, is set to launch a fresh assault on the UK market after a previous bid ended in failure.
Whole Foods Market: plans to tackle UK market
It plans to open stores around the country in a format that falls between the size of its flagship store in Kensington and its four smaller stores, also located in London.
Whole Foods Market had intended to open up to 40 stores when it introduced its brands to the UK, but ended up selling off some of its properties.
Its original expansion plans were undermined by poor financial results; in the year to September 2008 the company made an operating loss of £35.9m in the UK. Nonetheless, Jeff Turnas, who took over as Whole Foods Market's UK region president in March 2009, is understood to be overseeing plans for fresh growth.
The retailer entered the UK market in 2004 through the acquisition of seven Fresh & Wild stores. Its flagship store opened on Kensington High Street in 2007, but its Bristol store has subsequently closed.

I am intrigued to know why they think this will work having tried it once before. Sure, different sized format might reduce large overheads, and placing them in upmarket areas but surely there is not enough demand to warrant a store stocking only these items. This is the danger. I might buy organic milk but not organic meat. Tesco etc give me the choice and I fit it around all the other things I need to buy, some of which are not consumable. I would have to go elsewhere to complete my shop. It is a shame Whole Foods Market declined to comment.
