Daft Punk promotes live album with social networking widget
LONDON - Daft Punk, the Parisian electro-house duo, have launched a widget to promote their new album, which links to pages on Facebook as well as other sites.
The widget, which can be downloaded to desktops and embedded on blogs and websites, allows users to preview tracks and buy the first single from the new live album -- 'Alive 2007'.

The widget also links to dedicated pages set up on YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. It also features a biography of the band, photos, videos and a registration form for a Daft Punk newsletter.
The move comes as an increasing number of bands make use of social networking opportunities and embrace the web as the main plank of their marketing activity.
British band Radiohead launched their latest studio album in a download-only format this month. 'In Rainbow' was only available to buy through Radiohead's website, although fans could order the album in CD format as part of a box set for £40.
Fans could choose to pay as much or as little as they wanted for the download version, in a move which dealt a huge blow to ailing high street retailers and record labels.

With popularity of social networking rife in France, and the UK not far behind, this is an effective approach to engage the audience and promote their new album via work of mouth, at relatively low cost. They have identified the best way to stay at front of mind with consumers is to move into their space, whether it be their facebook page or iGoogle personalise homepage, rather than driving users to their own website.

A lot of producers / DJs are using podcasts as a key tool in their marketing strategy now too. A very subtle yet lucid way of reaching the consumer. In fact, does anyone know of any online resource that outlines quite succinctly all these various 'new media' marketing stratagies, but with specific reference to the commercial music category?
