Sun Online breaks download records with Keeley Hazell

LONDON - The Sun Online has racked up a record 10,000 downloads in just three days for its Page 3 desktop application, Desktop Keeley, which is based on the newspaper's popular Page 3 model Keeley Hazell.

The application, which was created by Glue London, is still in the soft launch stage yet it has already broken all download records for the Sun online.

Desktop Keeley is set to become even more popular as the red-top paper gets ready to back the new offering with a targeted display advertising campaign aimed at 18- to 35-year-old men that will roll out this weekend across websites including Freeloader and MSN.

The Sun newspaper will also support Desktop Keeley in the main newspaper with editorial coverage this week, while a signpost is to appear on a daily basis on Page 3.

Once Desktop Keeley is downloaded, Sun readers can see the Page 3 model strut provocatively in her underwear across their desktops, clicking her fingers and delivering news feeds on the latest sport, Page 3 or showbiz news.

She can also be set to appear at random, performing amusing sketches such as shooting bullet holes through the computer screen in a bond girl pose or blowing kisses which appear as a kiss mark on the screen.

The launch of the Desktop Keeley is part of a wider relaunch of Sun Online and will be followed by a number of new editorial developments in the next few weeks. It has already revamped its Mystic Meg section, which is dedicated to the paper's long-running astrologer.

Ben Hughes, head of digital marketing at News Group Media, said: "The launch of Desktop Keeley shows The Sun is still Number one for giving readers what they want. We combined the latest technology, great Sun content and Britain's favourite Page 3 girl to offer our readers a product which leaves our rivals standing."

Pete Picton, editor of The Sun Online, said: "Keeley's been a great focus for the homepage refresh which will feature a host of exciting editorial developments over the next few weeks."

The technology behind the innovative application was produced by glue London's in-house film production company Superglue.

The company shot Keeley against a green screen background, before cutting out the footage and rendering it transparent in order to create the effect of the Page 3 model walking over the desktop screen.

Prior to Desktop Keeley, a Sun newspaper Facebook group was the fastest downloaded application.

I love this idea. The Sun is streets ahead of its competitors when it comes to online.

The Sun online can never be accused of not knowing its audience. Hats off to both the Sun and Glue.

C'mon Sarah - it's an online desktop application, not a UN peace summit. It's a smart idea and well-executed. I think that's worth saying.

"Dressed in a stunning range of lingerie, Keeley will be at your beck and call 24/7 and comes armed with all the information you need, whether it’s celeb’s drunken antics, the latest football transfer news or the Page 3 girl of the day. " If people want oranges, give them oranges. Seriously, what were you expecting? Is it tacky? Yes. Is it progressive? No. But it's a well-targeted idea, hitting the LCD bullseye on the first try (with 18- to 35-year-old larger louts). Hell, if Keely could serve beer while she danced along the screen, it would be a knockout punch. Personally, I'm gonna give it a miss.

I disagree Roger, if everyone downloaded Keeley there would be no time for world wide rucks. No question, Keeley,Amii, Nikkala and Sam could do a better job than the UN. Naked ambition always wins through!

Jason - I think you have made a couple of good points there. Our world leaders should be compelled to download Desktop Keeley at once.
