LineOne pulls the plug on free internet service

LineOne, the BT- and United News & Media-owned internet service provider, has halted its unmetered internet access service, claiming that its popularity was costing the company too much money.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - LineOne, the BT- and United News & Media-owned internet service provider, has halted its unmetered internet access service, claiming that its popularity was costing the company too much money.

The company sent an email to subscribers to its 24/7 Net flat-rate service telling them it would end on September 30, to be replaced by a service offering free access at off-peak times only.

Andy Harwood, LineOne chief executive, blamed a minority of users who were putting financial pressure on the company by using the free system 24 hours a day.

The service, launched in March, gave customers free internet access with no call charges, on condition that they spent at least £5 a month on phonecalls with partner company Quip.

VirginNet has also delayed its free internet access service, Stop-the-Clock, which was meant to be launched in September. A spokeswoman said that the delay was due to technical problems that needed “ironing out”.
