LONDON (Brand Republic) – UK telecoms regulator Oftel is opposing legislation from the European Commission which would see operators such as BT having to give access to its local loop to competitors up to six months earlier than the date originally given by the regulator.

The EC has drafted regulations that demand all telecoms operators unbundle their local loops before January 1 2001.

It is feared that if Oftel’s proposals are accepted the liberalisation process across Europe could be held up by up to a year.
