Wildseed Studios launches to root out new animators for YouTube channel
Miles Bullough, a former head of broadcast at Aardman Animations, and Jesse Cleverly, the former BBC creative executive, have teamed up to find new animators for a dedicated YouTube channel going live in the autumn.
Jesse Cleverly and Miles Bullough: launch Wildseed Studios
Wildseed Studios plans to invest up to £10,000 into each of the 50 new projects over the next three years. Follow-on investments will be made available for successful work.
The studio has already invested in two projects. The first is a satirical animation for young adults based on the work of underground UK comic artist Ralph Kidson.
The work includes an unemployed squirrel as it tries to navigate the job market in 'Animal Job Centre', and foul-mouthed animals in 'Serengeti'.
Wildseed's second project, by Drew Casson, is a live-action sci-fi/horror web series. The 19-year-old shot the 90-minute, coming-of-age story, in vlog style and set the action in a small English town taken over by aliens.
More work will be announced soon.
Bullough, the managing director and co-founder of Wildseed, said: "A YouTube Channel will be a big part of what we do, but we are also working with creators who, for example, want to produce a mobile game first and that is really exciting for us where there is a great character at the heart of the game."
The first mobile game to be released is likely to be available for free on the App Store and Google Play. Wildseed said their development would probably be outsourced.
Wildseed Studios' target audience is aged 13 to 35. It is focusing on four genres: Genre Fiction (sci-fi/horror/fantasy); Animated Sitcom; Character Comedy, and comedy for kids aged 6 to 11 in both live action and animation.
Cleverly, the co-founder and creative director at Wildseed, said: 'We have also set aside 10 of our 50 potential investments for 'Wildseed's Wildseeds' – ideas that don't necessarily fit any of the above genres, but that we love and want to get involved with anyway."
The early pilots will use low-cost production. Bullough said: "Neither we nor our creators make money from our early stage investments – it all goes into the projects."
