LONDON (Brand Republic) – Sally Osman, the BBC controller of publicity, has as predicted last month been invited to apply to succeed the outgoing director of marketing and communications Matthew Bannister, who shocked the industry with his resignation last month.

Osman is said to have been formally invited to apply for the position this week. The BBC has appointed headhunters to search for a replacement for Bannister, who is leaving the corporation with no job to go to.

Osman joined the BBC two years ago from Channel 5 where she was broadcasting PR chief, a post she took up in July 1996 before the station launched. While at C5, she oversaw the mammoth C5 retuning campaign -- before the channel could go on air home video recorders had to be retuned and technicians were sent door-to-door to carry this out.

While at the BBC, Osman has been responsible for promoting radio, television, online and digital services.
