LONDON (Brand Republic) – Racing broadcast consortium Go Racing is looking for a chief executive to run the TV and interactive service it will create if its £700m bid for the rights to UK racing is accepted by the Racecourse Association.
The consortium, comprising Arena Leisure, Channel 4 and BSkyB, is understood to be looking for an external candidate with experience in gambling business and media -– although a background in TV is not essential.
The Go Racing consortium trumped a bid from ITV company Carlton, which tabled an initial £400m bid for the TV and interactive rights to the sport.
Carlton’s failure to secure the rights is believed to have steered the company away from a rift with ITV partner, Granada Media.
Carlton is thought to have made plans to schedule racing on Saturday afternoons -– a slot which would have fallen into the Granada-owned LWT licence.
Granada is understood to have been “furious” at the suggestion. It said that it has built up a solid schedule and there was no way it wanted it damaged by having to show racing.
Meanwhile the BBC has secured a long-term deal with Go Racing for the rights to the Derby, which it last broadcast in 1979. The BBC will, in return, give up some other races in which Go Racing is believed to be interested, including the Hennessey Gold Cup.
The BBC is expected to retain The Grand National, Royal Ascot and Goodwood.
