LONDON (Brand Republic) - Vivendi Universal, the newly formed Paris-based global media group, plans to launch a sports channel to rival Eurosport after the expected sale of its 50.5% stake in Eurosport International to TF1, France’s leading commercial TV station.

Last week, the media group confirmed it would “probably” withdraw from Eurosport and create a sports channel it could “control completely”. It added such a move would give it greater freedom in negotiating TV sports rights.

Recent reports have suggested the sale is based on a valuation of FFr3bn (£457m) for Vivendi Universal’s stake of the company, which it owns jointly with TF1.
