LONDON (Brand Republic) - German media group Bertelsmann has appointed US anti-trust prosecutor Joel Klein to the position of chairman and chief executive of its US operation, ahead of an EU investigation into its proposed merger with UK music group EMI.

Klein, who spearheaded the anti-trust lawsuit in the US against Microsoft, will run Bertelsmann’s tax, audit and legal affairs unit and be chief US liaison officer to the company’s headquarters in Germany. He will also advise Bertelsmann chief executive Dr Thomas Middlehoff on internet issues.

As well as overseeing the troubled EMI inquiry, Klein will lead the company through an industry-wide investigation by EU regulators about CD price fixing.
