KUALA LUMPUR Dentsu Young & Rubicam (DY&R) and McCann Erickson came out on top at the 2006 Kancil Awards, Malaysia's top advertising awards show.

DY&R scooped the Golden Kancil with 'Minefield' a print ad for Malaysian plastics giant Toyogo. The ad shows a man sweeping a minefield with rubbish bin lids made from Toyogo plastic attached to his feet. The strapline reads: 'Tough plastics'.

McCann Erickson Malaysia was named Agency of the Year. It pipped Lowe & Partners to the title, based on its strong showing at international awards shows including D&AD, Cannes, The One Show and the Spikes.

After Y&R, which won 17 awards on the night, the most awarded agency was JWT - with 16 gongs and the highest golds tally (three). Saatchi & Saatchi followed, with 12, while BBDO Malaysia took nine and Lowe & Partners won seven.

Advertiser of the Year went to Nestle which won numerous awards for its Smarties advertising. Domestic media giant Astro was handed the Platinum Award for outstanding services to the Malaysian advertising industry.
BBDO Malaysia's Pebble Goh was named Young Creative of the Year.

The theme of the awards, the 28th since they were launched by the Malaysian 4As, was 'Securing Malaysia's place on the creative world map'. Rishya Joseph, MD of DY&R Malaysia, said: "It's been a tremendous year for Malaysian agencies - we've beaten the powerhouses of Asia for the first time in the international awards stakes. Primarily, our success has been with print. TV is relatively strong, but it's an area that needs the most improvement."

No gold awards were given in the TV category - nor for innovative media, outdoor, design, direct marketing or digital.

Joseph added: "In a competitive marketplace, a great idea is the only thing that differentiates one brand from its competitor. The Kancils showed plenty of examples of great, intrusive advertising - but we need more of it to grow as an industry."

This year's Kancil Awards attracted 1,370 entries from 70 agencies.

International judges included Suthisak Sucharittanonta of BBDO Bangkok, TBWA's John Merrifield and Lim Sau Hoong from 10am Communications.

JWT's Edwin Leong, Lee Szu-Hung from McCann Erickson, Saatchis's Adrian Miller, Ronald Ng from BBDO and Y&R's Edward Ong were among the local judges.
