X Factor and I'm a Celeb dominate weekend viewing
LONDON - ITV1 hauled in a massive 14.3 million viewers for last night's 'X Factor' results show, followed by 9.8 million for the start of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!', according to unofficial overnight figures.
Londoner Jamie Archer departed the talent contest after judges failed once again to reach a consensus on who the best performer was. Archer was up against teenager Lloyd Daniels in the bottom two.
The Sunday night show accounted for 47.8% of all TV viewing at 8pm-9pm and hit an audience peak of 15.2 million.
While not reaching ITV1's heights BBC One nevertheless had a strong evening, reaching 9.1 million viewers with the first of the last three 'Doctor Who' episodes to feature David Tennant in the title role at 7pm-8pm and 5.8 million with 'Antiques Roadshow' at 8pm-9pm.
At 9pm-10.30pm 36.3% of viewers watched the introduction of the latest bunch of 'I'm a Celebrity' contestants including snooker player Jimmy White and former Page 3 girl Sam Fox.
'I'm a Celebrity' was up against the new series of 'Top Gear', which brought BBC Two 5.5 million viewers and a 19% share of viewing at 9pm-10pm.
On Saturday the 'X Factor' main show featured contestants performing songs by Queen and drew its highest audience to date with an average of 11.9 million viewers and a peak of 14.1 million.
Irish performers John and Edward Grimes aka Jedward's controversial Vanilla Ice themed performance of 'Under Pressure' was briefly interrupted when the music producer Calvin Harris ran on stage with a pineapple.
Harris, who had been scheduled to appear on ITV2 'The X Factor' spin-off 'The Xtra Factor', was ejected from the studio by security.
Over on 'Strictly Come Dancing', viewers were treated to the sight of Ronnie Corbett once again gracing the Saturday night TV schedule. The comic filled in for Bruce Forsythe, who was too poorly to film after coming down with flu.
Former cricketer Phil Tufnell was voted off after a dance off against former 'EastEnders' actor Ricky Groves.
'Strictly Come Dancing' pulled in 9.4 million viewers, giving BBC One a 36.5% share of viewing.
Saturday afternoon's ITV1 live coverage of England's friendly against Brazil was watched by 6.8 million viewers.
