Google OpenSocial to challenge Facebook

Google has now officially revealed its social networking plans for OpenSocial, supposed to be going live today. At a time when Social Networks are in everybodies lives, most especially Facebook, the time couldn't be better...

OpenSource will fill the hole of what most other rivals like Facebook have not been doing. It will have common APIs that application developers can use to create applications that work on any social networks (called “hosts”) that choose to participate.

Unlike rivals, like Facebook who require developers to build 'Facebook' applications with FBML for security reasons, OpenSource will allow developers to build applications with standard coding principles that can then be added to any other social network that allows standard coding.

So what does this mean for other networks?

Well, developers have been complaining for a long time that they are required to use different markup languages for different platforms...

Looking forward to seeing it later today! And continue on with my thoughts as to how this will be used as a marketing tool for brands & agencies!!!!

It opens a debate about advertising on these sites. As much as we want to use theses sites on behalf of our brands I ask if we have yet discovered the right way to do so? Certainly doing what some PR agencies do is wrong – creating false people who plug brands. Tthey soon get revealed and all trust for a brand is lost. Social networking marketing handled badly can undo a million pound TV campaign in days when word gets around. And boy does it travel fast. We all know that there are many dinosaurs in the ad industry who still think in old school ways but with a greater need for honesty – the public just don’t believe ads anymore - winning trust and loyalty may require starting with a new slate rather than trying to adapt old ideas.

Absolutely! If it were up to the consumer, marketers would not really exist within social networks, however this means that marketers need to & explore ways in which they can add value to the consumer, rather than old school push marketing! I honestly believe that 'Social Media' - 'web2.0' methodology is not just about digital... its about real value for the consumer, created by the consumer! As a brand or marketer we simply have to find a way to become one with our Target Group & give them reason to love our brand...
