Bing now bigger than Twitter in the US

Figures from Compete.com show that Bing has amassed 49.57 million unique US visitors since launching at the beginning of June. Its traffic is now greater than that of Digg (38.96 million), Twitter (23 million) and CNN (28.54 million).

However, despite getting of to a flying start, Bing is yet to prove as popular as it's predecessor Live.com, which attracted 79.4 million unique visitors in June.

Microsoft has big plans for Bing, backing it with a $100 million (£61m) ad campaign to establish it as a viable alternative to Google. The internet giant clearly has a long way to go, but Google is already worried, with co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly leading a high-powered team of executives scrutinising the potential of Microsoft's knowledge engine.

Early usability tests show that Bing's sponsored listings are read more than Google's, suggesting that it has the potential to attract advertisers previously reluctant to venture beyond Google.
