Why Twitter is making money from this article
LONDON - Twitter has generated almost $50 million worth of free publicity over the last 30 days as media coverage of the microblogging service remains frenzied.
Twitter has generated $50m of free PR over the last 30 days
Research from news monitoring service VMS puts the value of Twitter's TV, newspaper and magazine coverage at $48m (£29m), equivalent to half of what Microsoft plans to spend marketing its biggest product launch of the year, Bing.
The study shows that Twitter received almost 3 billion impressions over the last month. TV contributed 57 per cent of the PR value, newspapers 37 per cent and magazines 5 per cent (that leaves 1 per cent, which we assume is attributable to the internet).
"This is huge," VMS chief executive Peter Wengryn told AdAge. "We looked at online coverage of Twitter versus Google. Twitter is running significantly higher than Google and I didn't think anything was more popular than Google."
In contrast, Bing, Microsoft's new 'knowledge engine'. only managed to generate $573,834 (£364,000) of PR, with the reach of its free media coming in at 63 million impressions.
All of the extra media attention helped Twitter's unique users to hit the 21 million mark during June, an increase of 14 per cent on the previous month.
Twitter hit the headlines last week after the internet was flooded with 310 of its most confidential documents including partner agreements, financial projections and security passcodes.
