Live gig to be streamed through Twitter

LONDON - Twitter is set to host its first ever live gig, of sorts - next week the Twitgigs Experiment kicks off, a battle of the bands competition, which will be streamed through Twitter, with the winner chosen by Twitgigs followers on the night of the event.

The event is sponsored by Smirnoff Original Nights, scheduled for August 6 at Vibe Bar in Shoreditch, featuring on-screen live Twitter feeds, and music-related giveaways throughout the night.

Twitgigs plans to stream the event worldwide through Twitter using a dedicated Ustream feed.

Three UK bands, including Essay Like Nephew, Mike Digna and The Seal Cub Clubbing Club, will compete in separate gigs with the winning act, voted for by Twitter users, will nab a cash prize of £250, courtesy of Smirnoff.

Event promoters are relying on Twitter itself to draw users to the gig and spread buzz around the microblogging website.

Rax Lakhani, spokesman of Twitgigs, said Twitter is the "perfect medium to bring together musicians and music lovers".

lovely idea, £250 a bit tight though shared between a few band members and their manager- wont even cover the TV in the hotel room let alone the broken window.

Hi Dan Both @nishajl and myself \(@raxlakhani) are really looking forward to the evening and are hoping that this could turn into a regular event. All of the bands that are playing on the night are really interested in using platforms like Twitter to engage with their fans and have embraced the interactive format of the evening. What we want is to show the world that Twitter is not a socially excluding tool - quite the opposite: it comes alive when used as a collective platform. Tickets are still available at www.tinyurl.com/twitgigs. And yes, you do have to be on Twitter to come... Rax

By the way, any questions about the event should go to the actual organiser: Nisha who is contactable @twitgigs and @nishajl. She's done a blinding job in setting up this event and I'm priveledged to have been asked to be a spokesperson for The Twitgigs Experiment. Look forward to meeting y'all there!

commendable idea, innovative and a media first, however i still believe that Diageo offering up £250 is a bit of a bad show.

The Twitter phenomenon continues apace and it's fantastic to see the music world have been quick to harness its potential. Twitgigs are obviously all about connectivity, crowd sourcing and giving the power to the people - this is just one of many ideas that have sprung up out of the social media rush. Smirnoff have positioned themselves as the enabler for all of this, realising that using music and Twitter together they are achieving their broader music / brand association objectives whilst harnessing the talents of two music and social media fan enthusiasts and in doing so getting the brand out into the Twitter-sphere through a couple of experts, so obviously this is all very well and good and it's great to see brands and individuals experimenting with emerging media to test its possibilities. However, what will really define the success of this 'experiment' is the quality of the event itself. Communication channels are one thing, but they aren't everything... if the gig fails to live up to expectations at the core, the irony is people will be tweeting about like wildfire and their experiment could come back to eat itself....
