Vodafone to increase brand marketing on Second Life

LONDON - Vodafone is to increase its presence in multiplayer online virtual reality game 'Second Life' by launching a mobile telephony service that will connect users to the real world.

The mobile phone operator, which confirmed plans to launch its Vodafone Island in 'Second Life' next month, is to create handsets enabling users to contact each other in the game.

It is understood that Vodafone plans a host of communication methods to be used in 'Second Life', including an SMS instant messaging service, which it said were part of its plans to create a closer relationship with consumers.

A spokesman for Vodafone said its existence in 'Second Life' was part of a wider strategy to engage with its customers and encourage feedback on its products and services.

Vodafone will join Reuters, US hotel chain Aloft, Toyota, fashion label American Apparel, Channel 4 Radio and BBC Radio 1 as brands and companies that have a marketing presence or service in 'Second Life'.

Among the more curious additions to the game include digital marketing agency AKQA, which opened a virtual office in November, in an attempt to attract and hire new marketing talent. It follows Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Leo Burnett and Arc Worldwide, which have already opened offices in 'Second Life'.

The game, which was created by San Francisco-based company Linden Labs, claims to have garnered 2.36m residents worldwide since launching in 2005.
