Tomboy Films launches viral division with Veitch and Manuel on board

LONDON - Tomboy Films, the London-based commercials production company, is launching a viral division, Tomboy Virals.

The new division has already signed three viral directors: Rob Manuel, Joel Veitch and Ben Wheatley. It will be run by Claire Jones, who will also produce for the three directors.

Manuel has run the cult website b3ta.com since 2000. It receives 30m hits per month and his weekly newsletter has 75,000 subscribers. He has recently produced work for the comedian Dave Gorman and the BBC2 comedy series 'Look Around You'.

Veitch is a computer animator, commercials director and the creator of the website rathergood.com. He has directed ads for Nintendo, Quiznos Subs, Switch and VH1. He remains with 2AM Films for commercials representation.

Wheatley is best known for his "cunning stunt" viral. He is a live-action director whose commercials reel includes work for Budweiser, Aftershock and Sky TV.

Commenting on the launch, the Tomboy join managing director Glynis Murray said: "Rob, Joel and Ben are keen to work with creatives on developing their viral concepts. They are also looking forward to collaborating with one another, pooling their talents and their unique knowledge of the internet."

Following the launch of viral outfits by a number of production companies, the commercials producers' trade body, the Advertising Producers Association, announced it was widening it remit with the launch of a virals and branded content division in February this year.

The arm aims to provide a business and legal framework for companies moving into branded content and offers advice on contractual and copyright issues. It will also provide a forum to discuss industry issues and will promote members' services and expertise.
