BBC News 24 tops poll of best news service for major stories
LONDON - Television viewers have chosen BBC News 24 as their first port of call for a major news story.
Members of the Opinion Leader Panel, a monthly BBC omnibus survey, were asked where they would turn to first for news on a major national or international event, with 15% choosing BBC News 24, up from 11% in October 2004. Sky News over the same period of time dropped from 16% to 13%.

The figures also revealed high popularity for BBC News Online, which increased its appeal from 8% to 32% among opinion formers, with 79% selecting "any BBC channel or service" when it came to looking for information on a major story.
In 2005, BBC News 24 became the most watched news channel with weekly reach, measured as an audience watching for a minimum of three minutes, increasing to 5.1m from 4.1m in 2004 -- a 24% increase year on year.
The average weekly reach for Sky News in 2005 is 4.6m, up from 4m last year. The average share in multichannel homes for BBC News 24 is 0.61%, up from 0.57% for 2004.
This is the same as Sky News, which has held a 0.6% share for the last two years. The survey was commissioned by the BBC.
