Turcan has worked in publishing since the early 1990s, where he headed business development for News International's dotcom start-up, and has held positions at Capital Radio, 19 Entertainment and Spectrum Strategy.
He headed Dovetail, formerly Galleon CI, which was created after the merger of the magazine subscriptions arms of BBC Worldwide and Dennis Publishing in 2005.
Carolyn McCall, chief executive of Guardian Media Group, said: "His experience and track record will be invaluable to GNL as its digital activity accelerates."
Guardian Unlimited launched an environmental news website this week, featuring comment and articles on climate change, energy use and conservation.
