Is the world ready for an environmentally friendly phone? We are about to find out, thanks to an innovative project being presented on the web by Dutch designer Dave Hakkens.
Hakkens created an online video, which, step by step explains his 'Phonebloks' concept and the reasons for the need of such invention. The actual phone has not yet been produced. The video’s aim is not to sell the device but gain support from the online audience to show phone manufacturers that the time has come for "a phone worth keeping".
The designer believes that by giving users the opportunity to upgrade parts of the phone – 'bloks' – rather than replacing the whole device, the global electronic waste will be reduced.
This innovative idea unsurprisingly caught a lot of attention online. But as for the video produced to spread it, there is room for improvement. The video is very informative, which is important when explaining a pioneering concept, but the delivery is quite dull, and at times too heavy on detail. This might put off a lot of viewers – especially ones that are not tech-savvy.
As for a low cost production, the video quality is decent and the use of images makes the concept easy to understand. However, it could all be delivered in less time and in a more engaging way.
Luckily, for the inventor, the project itself will be of interest, which enhances the video's shareability. Undoubtedly, this is only the beginning for Phonebloks and, if the project succeeds, future videos for this revolutionary product will be much improved.
