About the National Trust
Founded in 1895, the National Trust is a charity that cares for historic houses, gardens, forests, castles and miles of coastline across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Welcoming 20 million visitors of all ages and backgrounds every year, the National Trust has over four million members, 60,000 volunteers and 12,000 employees. There is a separate National Trust for Scotland.
The National Trust is also a huge retail chain, a multi-million pound catering business and custodian for holiday cottages, pubs, inns and whole villages. The Trust’s central office is in Swindon but the charity has additional regional offices in towns and cities such as Salisbury, Exeter, Bury St Edmonds, Altrincham, Ambleside, Manchester, York, Newcastle, Shrewsbury, Chesterfield, Birmingham, Ballynahinch, Wrexham and Newport.
The Trust has ambitions to ‘build deeper relationships and emotional connections with people’ and there are many brand and marketing opportunities available at its regional and central offices. These include senior planner, campaign manager, marketing manager, marketing assistant, database executive, communications consultant, events assistant, digital project manager, events manager and content executive.
The National Trust has both an in-house marketing agency and employs expert marketing consultants. The charity believes its recent multi-million pound Systems Simplification Programme (SSP) will transform how it communicates and engages with its supporters. The Trust’s overriding aim is to grow the nation’s love of special places.
The National Trust is also a major fundraiser in the charity sector. Membership and visitor income cover only a third of its costs so annual fundraising worth £75 million is vital. Funds are raised in a variety of ways including Heritage Lottery funding, multi-million pound grants, commercial partnerships and public campaigns. Fundraising roles encompass positions such as relationship manager, grants manager, major gifts manager, database co-ordinator, projects and campaigns manager, high value donor manager, fundraising co-ordinator and community fundraising manager.
Support for employees takes many forms. These include induction, a personal career progression development programme, a leadership programme for managers, payment for professional subscriptions and secondments.
