Head of Marketing & Communications

Location: Portsmouth, South Coast

Salary: circa £45,000 plus benefits.

The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is the focus for Naval charity. Established in 2007 to provide a better quality of life for serving and former naval personnel, RNRMC is a federation of subsidiary charities each of which has a specific focus. Now firmly established and successfully increasing income and grants, the RNRMC is entering the second stage of its exciting growth plan and is looking to recruit a talented individual to lead the organisation’s marketing and communications activity. This will have many dimensions, both internal and external and will involve a range of stakeholder groups including serving personnel, corporate partners, philanthropic organisations and a broad spectrum of external media.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, as part of the senior management team, this is a critical new role that will further raise the profile and understanding of the charity, its aims and its beneficiaries. It will create a public relations profile commensurate with the RNRMC’s strategic vision to be the national focus for naval charity and will dovetail with the RNRMC’s fundraising strategy.

The Role:

  • To provide strategic and tactical leadership of the marketing, PR and communications activities of the RNRMC and its subsidiaries.
  • To lead and manage the internal and external marketing and communications resources and budget, building a small team, whilst managing external agencies.
  • To work closely alongside the Chief Executive, senior management team and Trustees to align marketing and communications activity in support of the organisation’s strategy and fundraising targets.

The Person:

  • Success in this role will require someone with a high degree of personal ambition motivated to create a capability from scratch. This ambition must be equalled by the ambition for the charity to succeed. You will have the ability to grow with the role, relying on a strong core skill set and unafraid to learn and develop in new areas. Strong leadership and management skills are required alongside experience of managing external agencies.
  • A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills and the gravitas and credibility to build relationships at all levels both internally and externally. You will be resilient and flexible in your approach and style.
  • Educated to degree level, ideally with a post graduate qualification in marketing, this individual will have a broad marketing and communications skill set gained within either a commercial, not for profit or charitable organisation. Empathy towards the aims of this charity and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and the wider Armed Forces will also be important to success in this position.
