The figure is the highest since the site started publishing ABCe data in August 2007, and moves it ahead of Mirror Group Digital, which fell 9% to 548,303. Mirror Group Digital includes Mirror.co.uk, 3am.co.uk, Mirrorfootball.co.uk, and DailyRecord.co.uk.

It comes just weeks after the Independent's new title, i, reported a 31,650 month-on-month jump in circulation to record an ABC figure of 175,714 in February.

Independent online takes content from The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and the i, as well as unique content from its journalists.

Still a relative minnow, the Independent online's 10.8% uplift on January meant that it outperformed the lions of online news, MailOnline and guardian.co.uk.

One commentator believes it has benefited from the buzz surrounding i and its attendant TV ads, starting Jemima Khan.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail's online success story suffered a blip in February, as it fell 1.4% to 3,143,141 daily average browsers. On the monthly measure, it was down 9.1% to 50,927,975.

While the MailOnline is still streets ahead of nearest rival, guardian.co.uk, the fall will be food for thought for executives, ahead of its US office opening.

More than one in three visitors to the MailOnline were UK residents – 1,411,846 daily average browsers.

Second-placed guardian.co.uk, by comparison, attracted 2,460,009 daily average browsers, up 6.85% on January.  Its unique monthly user figure came in at 39.485,496.

Telegraph.co.uk remains in third place, registering 32,845,994 monthly unique users, and 1,1851,554 average daily browsers.
