Social responsibility in China

Staggering growth rates in low-tech, labour-intensive production for export have made China the 'workshop of the world'. But appalling working conditions, long working hours, poor wages and dismal health and safety standards are rife among workers in China.

The issues of CSR in China are therefore highly topical. Western companies are investing heavily in CSR policies for their operations in China and social audits of their Chinese partners and suppliers, as it is increasingly clear that voluntary codes of conduct are no longer sufficient.

The conference 'Responsibly Made in China?', held in Denmark in January, called for an overview of the situation and brought together experts and businessmen to discuss the issues at stake.

In a first of its kind, 80 participants including CSR managers, CEOs, scholars, journalists and representatives of NGOs and trade unions, joined forces. They discussed workers' rights, joint ventures, NGOs, trade unions, supply chains, sustainable development, corporate governance, the role of the state and multinationals.

As a next step in the debate on CSR issues in China, the Asia Research Centre (ARC) and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) will be publishing an edited volume based on the papers and insights gained at the conference.
