Whitehall jokers implicated in latest Wikipedia scandal
LONDON - Whitehall pranksters may be behind the latest editing scandal to affect Wikipedia's accuracy, after the insertion of fake details about senior MPs was traced back to the heart of UK government.
Profile details altered in the prank, which involved inserting false criminal records and claims of drug abuse, were those of Prime Minister Gordon Brown and foreign secretary David Milliband.
Latest technology launched this year called WikiScanner can now trace the IP addresses of those responsible for editing the collaborative online encyclopaedia and has revealed the embarrassing source of this latest misuse of the site.
Since its launch Wikipedia has battled against firms and pranksters altering entries on the site.
A number of culprits were found to be within the PR industry, with a raft of leading UK agencies exposed this week as continuing to edit entries despite being banned. Wikipedia's guidelines disqualify the subjects or organisations associated with them from editing their own entries.
WikiScanner has also exposed the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central intelligence Agency in the US as being responsible for entries on topics such as the Iraq War, Richard Nixon and Guantanamo Bay.
